Google launches Google plus API

Developers, do you want to create websites and utilities based around Google Plus? Now you can with the release of a limited version of the Google+ API. Google has released extensive APIs for many of its products, but Google+ was unfortunately left out until now.

Before this release, the most you can do to integrate Google+ with your web app is to add one of those +1 buttons. Now, the API enables you to do a whole lot more with your Google+ users.

Right now, the API is rather limited compared to other social network’s API. It has read-only access to the Google+ system, this means you can only retrieve elements such as profile information and activities. It’s not much, but it’s a good start for a limited (and beta) API. Facebook’s API, for comparison, allows for much more access and allows read and write access.

This API will probably allow developers to create web profile widgets among other things. Sadly it does not support retrieving information regarding Circles, but the feature will hopefully come in a future update.

This is the full announcement made by the Google+ team by e-mail:

Greetings developers,

Thank you for showing your interest in the Google+ platform on our developer interest form. We promised to let you know when we had more details to share. Well, that time has come…

Today, we’re launching the first of the Google+ APIs. This initial API release is focused on public data only — it lets you read information that people have shared publicly on Google+. Read ourblog post for more details.

Also, we’re happy to introduce a new Google+ developers site. This will be the place to go for ourpoliciestermsdiscussions with other developers, access to documentation, tools that make development on the Google+ platform easier and more fun, and of course, the place where announcements concerning new releases will be made.

We’re looking forward to seeing what you build with the API. Today is just the beginning, and your work will affect what comes next, so go ahead and get started.

Happy coding!

  4. I think it will be much better if Google labs will improve API. I don’t find anything helpful about it right now. Maybe they should augment it and put more features in it.

  5. The Google +1 button greatly helped my site to have traffic, I’m sure that this Google API will certainly boost it much more. Is it available for everyone even if we are not developers?
